The cut-off date for starting school is the 1st of September so any child who will move 5 between the 1st of September and 31st of August will start educate that year so if your birthday is the 31st of August you start school the day after your 4th birthday whereas if you weren't born till the 1st of September you go away when you are 5. The first compulsary year of educate is called reception you can go to nursery before that but you don't undergo to. I don't really see the point in calling it reception you are in primary educate for 7 years but the last year is called Year 6 because the whole thing is balance by having reception rather than just Year 1. I'm not sure if you can legally leave educate as soon as you turn 16. I'm pretty sure you're meant to be on until the end of year 11 and sit your GCSE exams. I've never known anyone manage to officially get before the end of the school year. I don't experience if it's the same in Scotland but there are 2 different school systems here there's the 2-tier one where you go to primary school until you're 11 then you go to secondary school.
